Multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey is best known for his work as a percussionist, but also plays the piano and trombone. He has been playing live in New York since 2003, having formed his earliest groups as a leader in 2004. He received his B.M. in Jazz Studies and Performance at William Paterson University in 2004, and received his M.A. from Wesleyan University, where he studied with the legendary Anthony Braxton, Jay Hoggard, and Alvin Lucier. He is presently pursuing a doctorate in musical arts at Columbia University, while contributing regularly to New York’s creative music scene. He has led his own ensembles, including Oblique with alto saxophonist Loren Stillman, guitarist Todd Neufeld, pianist John Escreet, and bassist Christopher Tordini, as well as performing solo. He is also a part of Steve Lehman’s trio and part of the collaborative trio Paradoxical Frog with Ingrid Laubrock (tenor sax) and Kris Davis (piano). In addition, he has performed with Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman, Butch Morris, Peter Evans, Roscoe Mitchell, Misha Mengelberg, John Zorn, Vijay Iyer, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, and Tim Berne, among others.

He has received commissions from the Van Lier Fellowship, Roulette, and the International Contemporary Ensemble.
