Max Johnson is a fresh and energetic bassist who has emerged since 2009 as an active sideperson and leader in a number of creative jazz contexts as well as a number of bluegrass bands. Johnson also exhibits compositional talent and artistic vision in his work with artists such as Kirk Knuffke, Ziv Ravitz, Tyshawn Sorey, Jeff Davis, Ross Martin, Mark Whitecage, and Steve Swell. He has two trios and a quartet in his name and has organized bands that include Mike Pride and Kris Davis, among others.

Johnson met bassist Henry Grimes at Vision Festival in 2009, and afterwards studied privately with him. He studied with Cameron Brown, Mark Helias, and Reggie Workman at the New School.
