Primary Scene: Brooklyn/New York
Pianist and composer Angelica Sanchez has been involved in the New York scene since arriving in 1994, after studying composition and jazz at Arizona State University. She has led her own trio, quartet, and quintet, featuring Marc Ducret, Tony Malaby, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey. She has also played regularly with Wadada Leo Smith, Paul Motian, Ralph Alessi, Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Mario Pavone, Trevor Dunn, Mark Dresser, Ed Schuller, Reggie Nicholson, and Mike Sarin, among others. Her album Life Between was named one of the year’s best by All About Jazz in 2009.
Sanchez was the recipient of the French/American Chamber Music America grant in 2008. She has also been awarded a number of artist residencies: Towson University (2005), Southern Connecticut State University (2010), University of Farmington [Maine] (2010), and the Rockefeller Brothers Pocantico (2011).
