Primary Scene: New York
Matana Roberts is originally from Chicago, where she was active in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). While in Chicago, she formed the group Sticks and Stones with bassist Josh Abrams and drummer Chad Taylor, which played regularly at the Velvet Lounge. She relocated to New York City in 2002 and has become an important part of the jazz, improvisatory, and experimental music scenes since that time.
Roberts has led several cutting-edge groups, including her projects Coin Coin and Coin Coin: Mississippi Moonchile. Her quartet with Taylor Ho Bynum, Thomson Kneeland, and Tomas Fujiwara, was one of the most important early groups of the millennial generation. She also has had a long-standing solo act which includes work on alto sax and vocals.
